FAMILY PICNIC - RSVP HERE
When: Sunday June 1st 4:00-6:30pm
Where: Mills Filed 96 Gould Street Needham, MA
Details: Join us for our annual Pack 4 Family Picnic! Help us celebrate the end of our scouting year, and enjoy great food, games and company. AOL families are welcome to join us!
Memorial Day Flag Placements and Parade
Pack 4 is invited to join scouts from Troop 13 to assist members of the Needham VFW with replacing flags on veterans’ gravesites at the Needham cemeteries. Scouts are also invited to participate in the Needham Memorial Day Parade. While all scouts are welcome to attend these events, please use your best judgement as to whether the event will be a good fit for your scout.
Flag Placements: Scouts should wear their Class A uniforms, and bring work gloves, pliers and a bag to carry the flags they'll be removing. Pack leaders may or may not be there - please look for leaders from Troop 13 for instructions. Parents must stay with and supervise their scouts. Scouts should be mindful to show courteous, respectful behavior while visiting the cemetery.
Monday, May 19th, 5:00PM - 6:30PM (approx) at Needham Cemetery, Parish Rd (meet at the canons).
Wednesday, May 21st, 5:00PM - 6:30PM (approx) at St. Mary's Cemetery (enter the cemetery via the 2nd entrance on the left off Cedar Street coming from Central Ave).
Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 26th, 10:00AM
Scouts should arrive prior to 10:00 and meet at the canons in Needham Cemetery. The parade starts in Needham Cemetery and ends at Memorial Field. The route from the cemetery to Memorial is about a mile, and there are ceremonies on both ends that scouts will need to stand quietly through. If attending all parts of the event feels like too much for your scout, please adjust accordingly and attend what works best for you. It is important that scouts wear their Class A uniforms for this event - blue/tan shirt, hat and neckerchief. As with flag placements, Pack leaders may or may not be there; families should look for Troop 13 leaders for instructions.

April 2025 News
Dear Pack 4 Families,
It was wonderful to see such a great turnout at the Blue & Gold last night. We hope your scouts enjoyed the magic show! A special congratulations to our Arrow of Light scouts and families. Thanks to Kristen and Andrea for coordinating this year, and to Cubmaster Ryan for leading the program and for the exceptional State of the Pack address! Dana and I would also like to say how much we appreciate all of the kindness you showed us last night, and I would like to take just a minute to turn some of that back to you. We are so fortunate in Needham to have a million opportunities for our kids. Whether it be sports, music, theater, art, STEM, enrichment classes, etc, there are so many ways to spend your family's time and energy, and we are so grateful that you have chosen scouting to be one of those things. Scouts is a little unique from other activities in that we require so much from you, the parents. You're not just dropping off at a lesson or sitting on the sidelines cheering. Everything we do - from helping to build a Pinewood Derby car (but not helping too much ), to sleeping (or not sleeping) on the Battleship, to spending a very rainy weekend in the woods for Camporee - you have to be all in, right there alongside your scout and the Pack leaders. And nothing that I have done behind the scenes would matter if you weren't willing to do that. So, thank you for choosing Pack 4, thank you for sharing your awesome kids with us, and thank you for always showing up for your kids and for the Pack. What Dana and I have loved most - and what we will miss most - is getting to know and spending time with all of you.
I am thrilled to be passing the Committee Chair baton to Andrea Graham, who I know will do a wonderful job in this role. I'll be sticking around and working alongside Andrea for a bit, so, as always, don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need anything. We have a busy spring with lots of great activities planned, including our first spring camping trip at Camp Norse - registration is now open, see details below!
Warmly and with gratitude,
Lauren

Veterans Day Ceremony
I'm working to confirm details for this year's ceremony, but based on past years, I think this should be pretty accurate....
When: Monday, November 11th at 11:00 (please arrive by 10:45)
Where: Memorial Field, Needham
Details: Pack 4 is invited to join other Needham scouting groups to participate in the Veterans Day Ceremony. Our Pack is chartered by VFW Post 2498, and this is a meaningful service opportunity for scouts. However, the ceremony is usually around an hour long, and scouts are expected to stand and watch quietly, so we recognize that this event may be most appropriate for our older dens. Full Class A uniform is required (blue/tan shirt, hat and neckerchief); Pack t-shirts are not permitted.
Reminder: Youth Protection Requirement
To earn their Bobcat Adventure, all cub scouts are required to do the activities in the "Parents' Guide to Youth Protection" with their grownup. The booklet is attached to every cub scout handbook, and can also be found here. Adults should review the entire booklet; the activities to work on with your scout(s) start on page 20. When you've completed the requirement, please let your den leader know.
Important: BSA Registration Renewal
Many of you received an email last week from the BSA with instructions on how to renew your/your scout's membership. A reminder that, in past years, the Pack renewed everyone's membership as part of our annual charter renewal, but this year, families must renew on their own directly with the BSA.
If you can't find the email, you can log-in to your My.Scouting.org account. Under Menu, click My Applications, and then My Renewals. Any registrations eligible for renewal will appear. And this won't apply to all Pack families - if you were a new family last year, your renewal will be due one year after you joined the Pack. Please reach out with any questions or if you'd like me to check your registration expiration date. This is a new process for all of us and we're learning as we go!

This event is open to registered families only. Click HERE for additional details and to register.
*An important note about overnights: New BSA youth protection rules mandate that adults staying overnight in connection with a scouting activity must be currently registered as an adult volunteer. Cub Scout parents and legal guardians are exempt from this rule and can participate without registering as a volunteer. However, this exception does not apply to other family members, including siblings who are age 18+. If you have grandparents, aunts/uncles, older siblings, etc who would like to participate in any overnight this year, including Camporee, they must be registered as an adult volunteer. It can take 2-3 weeks for registrations to process, so please plan accordingly. Reach out if you'd like more information.

Please reach out if you have any questions or issues. This is a new process for all of us and we're learning as we go!
New families: Please be sure that you have completed both the Pack registration form (Google form found HERE) and a BSA application for your scout. The Pack form is for our record keeping, the BSA application gets your child officially registered with the national organization.
Prospective families: While there is no registration deadline per se, your scout must be registered prior to Camporee if you are interested in attending. Click HERE, and follow the directions under To Register a New Scout. Please reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.

June 2024 News
With our Family Picnic last week, we officially wrapped up our '23-'24 scouting year! Thank you to all of the families who were able to join - we couldn't have had a more beautiful night to celebrate a fun year! Extra thanks to Nate and Rich for providing their grills and doing a brilliant job as grill-masters, to Jenna and Daniels for assisting on the grills and with serving, and to all of you who contributed food, games, paper goods and extra hands to make the night a success!
We are so glad your scouts and your families were a part of Pack 4 this year, and we would love to hear about your experience with the Pack. We would appreciate it if you could take a few moments to complete a very brief (4 questions!) survey: Pack Parent Survey 2024. Responses are completely anonymous unless you choose to identify yourself. Your feedback will help us reflect and improve as we begin planning for next year.
And we hope you'll be with us again next year! Registration for '24-'25 is now open. All current families must renew their registrations; details below. I'll have the full calendar available in early July, but for now, save the date for our first Pack Meeting on September 8th (tentative but likely) and for Camporee on September 21st - 22nd.
If you will not be registering next year, we're very sorry to see you go - please let either your Den leader or me know so we don't keep bothering you with reminders!
Although we did some "thank yous" at the picnic, I'd like to give one more shoutout to our Pack team - our new Cubmaster, Ryan; our Den Leaders - Dan, Nate, Gene, JR and Dana; our outgoing and incoming Popcorn Kernels - Evan and Rich, respectively; our Pinewood Derby Coordinator, Ashley; and finally two parents who work entirely behind the scenes, but do so much for us throughout the whole year - our Advancement Chair, Jenna, and our Treasurer, Adam. We were also very fortunate to have several parents join as Committee Members this year - Andrew Fedder, Sharon Kemp, and Daniels White. There is no Pack 4 without our volunteers, and we would love to have more parents join the team next year! You can view all of our current open spots HERE.
As always, please reach out with any questions. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and restful summer, and we hope to see you in September!
2024/2025 REGISTRATION
Registration is now open for current and new families! All current families who are continuing next year must renew their registration. Please click HERE to complete the Google Form and pay the annual dues.
Important Info about Annual Dues: Annual Pack dues for 2024-2025 are $125. There is a $25 discount for Pack siblings. The rate for registered leaders' scouts is $60, applicable to one scout per family only. The Pack covers the annual $65 fee for leaders, reflected in this discount.
New this year, the BSA will be billing families directly for their BSA and Council dues; in past years, these dues were included in the Pack's annual fees and the Pack paid scouts' dues as part of our annual charter renewal. We expect BSA/Council dues to total ~$130 this year. All families who joined the Pack prior to March of 2024 will be billed in December 2024; families who joined after March will be billed on the anniversary of their registration.
No Scout will be denied membership in Pack 4 due to financial circumstances; scholarships are available for all Pack fees by contacting Lauren.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Fourth of July Parade: Needham Scouting groups are invited to participate in the annual July 4th Parade. We need a Pack parent or two who are available day-of the parade to help organize the kids - no other preparation or planning is necessary! If you'll be in town for the holiday, your scout would like to participate and you're willing to help coordinate, please reach out ASAP.
Family Fishing Day: We would also love to find a volunteer to run our summer fishing event in August. This is a super light lift - pick a weekend day that works for you (we usually do 3 hours or so), choose your favorite local, kid-friendly fishing spot and bring the bait (which you'll be reimbursed for)! Please reach out if you're interested.

It's hard to believe we are in the final stretch of our scouting year! We have lots happening in May and June, including our May Pack meeting, Memorial Day events, and our annual family picnic. And although we do not meet formally in the summer, there are several fun activities planned, including Pack 4 Night at the Revs (please note the RSVP date is this Sunday) and a WooSox game and overnight at Polar Park!
As we begin to wrap things up and look ahead to next year, we are still very much in need of new parent volunteers to help as the Picnic Coordinator, Overnight Coordinator and Day-Trip Coordinator. We're also looking for someone to organize our summer fishing activity (a super light lift - pick a day that works for you, choose your favorite local, kid-friendly fishing spot and bring the bait!). No experience necessary, and you do not need to register as a leader for these roles. Please reach out if you're willing to help or would like to talk more. Thank you!

Pack 4 April 2024 News
Good morning, Pack 4 families! Please bear with me though a long April message - with how busy this time of year is, I want to make sure you have the full list of spring events, and we have some Pack business to cover. Of special note - if you're planning to attend the day trip to the American Heritage Museum, please RSVP in the next day or so. Thanks!
BLUE & GOLD WRAP-UP & LEADERSHIP NEWS
Thank you to all of the families who were able to attend our celebration on Sunday! It was amazing to see such a full room. We hope your scouts had fun and the ice cream sundae sugar rushes wore off before bedtime ;-). Special thanks to all of the parents who helped out, and a shout-out to the Wolf Den for the amazing work on their skit, especially being so brave to perform in front of such a big crowd. A quick Lost & Found note - we found 3 Lion belt loops during clean-up, and we're missing one Tiger neckerchief. Let me know if you're missing loops or grabbed an extra neckerchief by mistake.
As we shared at the banquet, we are so grateful to our AOL families for being a part of the Pack 4 community for so many years, and we are so proud of the scouts for their commitment and hard work. If you missed the AOL slideshow, you can check it out here: AOL Slideshow 2024 . We owe a huge amount of gratitude to JR for all of the time and exceptional leadership he has given to the den, as well as to Jorge, for his many, many years of dedicated service to the Pack as both a Den Leader and Cubmaster. As we bid good-bye to Jorge, we are happy to welcome Ryan Bagwell as our new Cubmaster, and we're looking forward to having Ryan in this role!
One of our main priorities for the spring is to continue developing our team of parent volunteers. As I begin my final year with the Pack, it's critical that I start "peeling off" some of the different jobs that have become mine over the years in order to make the Committee Chair role a bit more manageable for whoever takes over next March. Looking ahead to spring activities, it makes sense to start with the roles below. I would love to work with someone on each of these beginning now to ensure a smooth and easy transition next year. No experience necessary - we'll go through everything together! These roles would not require you to register as a leader, although that's always welcomed. Please reach out if you're willing to help, or would like to talk more.
Family Picnic Coordinator: This is a super light lift and an easy, casual event. It entails reserving field space for the picnic, setting up a SignUp Genius for volunteers, purchasing food and supplies (to be reimbursed), and being on-site to set-up, oversee and clean-up the event.
Overnight Coordinator: Plan 2-3 overnights throughout the year with established locations or identify new locations as needed; set up Google forms/SUGs for registrations; reconcile registrations and payments; communicate necessary info to registered families. You do NOT need to attend every overnight!
Day-Trip Coordinator: Similar to the overnight coordinator - plan 2-3 day trips per year. These usually include Pack outings to Providence Bruins and NE Revolution games and a day at Base Camp in Milton.

February 2024 News
Start your engines, Pack 4 families, it's Derby time! We're looking forward to seeing all of the kids' creative and speedy creations at the mandatory car weigh-in on Thursday - sign up for a timeslot HERE. Please also read the weigh-in reminders below and review the Derby newsletter to ensure that your scout's car follows the rules! While slight weight adjustments are expected, the weigh-in runs much more smoothly when extensive modifications to cars are not required.
We also still need a lot of help on Derby Day with set-up and clean-up. No experience necessary - we just need hands! Sign up HERE.
Pinewood Derby Weigh-In: All cars must be weighed-in to compete!
When: Thursday, February 8th, 5:30PM-8:00PM
Where: The Alexanders' Home
SignUp: Click HERE to sign up for a time slot; contact Dana at dmalex@hotmail.com or Ashley at ashley.mackoff@gmail.com if you're not able to attend to make alternate arrangements.
Details: The Weigh-In serves as the official registration for the Derby. Cars are registered by number and name, and are weighed and checked against size requirements and inspection rules (see the Derby newsletter for all rules). **After weigh in, we will hold onto all cars; scouts will get them back after their race.**
Important Reminders for the Weigh-In:
Cars must be finished and paint must be dry.
While we encourage families to weigh their cars at home to have an idea of the weight, only the weight calculated at the weigh-in, using the Pack's scales, will count as the official weight.
The maximum weight for a car is 5oz; this is strictly enforced to ensure fairness.
Simple tools will be available to remove excess weight, attach weight if needed (please bring your own weights) and for emergency repairs.
Standard, unmodified wheels and “nail” axles (supplied with kit) must be used; no after-market wheels and/or axles are permitted.
The assigned car number must be clearly visible on the car.
Cars must have a name!
Cars will be left with Dana and Ashley at the weigh-in and will be returned to scouts following the Derby.

January 2024 Pack 4 News
Happy New Year, Pack 4 families! We hope everyone has enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday season and break. As we begin the second half of our scouting year, check out our highlight reel from the fall: Pack 4 Fall 2023 Highlights! In September, we welcomed 23 new families to the Pack, joining our 28 returning scouts (and giving us our largest Lion and Tiger Dens ever!). Scouts had a great overnight experience at the Needham Camporee, complete with an epic marshmallow roast. October brought a fun outing to Base Camp and our annual Raingutter Regatta, plus lots of popcorn selling. In November, we collected 76lbs (!) of cereal, jelly and fruit snacks for the Needham Community Council, scouts participated in the Needham Veterans Day Ceremony, and families enjoyed a new overnight at the Mystic Aquarium (don't miss the beluga photos in the highlight reel!). In December, we celebrated our record-breaking popcorn fundraiser with a fun night of climbing at Rock Spot and we kicked off our Pinewood Derby at our December meeting. And thanks to our amazing Den leaders, the Dens have participated in hikes, several park and playground clean-ups, visits to the police and fire stations and more.
We have lots more planned for 2024 and we're looking forward to kicking off the new year with our Derby car-making clinic on Sunday, January 7th - please be sure to RSVP for a time slot! Also mark your calendars for our outing to the Providence Bruins on 1/14, our January Pack meeting on 1/21 and our next overnight, to Battleship Cove, in March! Details below...

Details: The PWD Clinic is a great opportunity for scouts to get assistance building their cars. We will have a variety of tools for the kids to use. Car kits will be available for those who have not yet received theirs.
Important Reminders:
Please come with a car design in mind! If you need inspiration, a Google search for "Pinewood Derby Cars" will bring up lots of ideas, and our website has pictures of cars from past years.
Want to learn more about the science behind a fast Derby car? Check out this article and video by Mark Rober (thanks to Pack dad Matt Arnould for sharing!). *Please note, not all of Mark's tips are "legal" according to the Pack's Rules and Regulations . Always follow the information in the Derby Info Packet to be safe!
Safety glasses are required when using the equipment at NFM. We will have some glasses available, but please bring your own if you have them.
Remember that we recognize creativity in addition to speed! On Derby Day, trophies will be awarded for:
Most Spirit: we'll be looking for Den, Pack, Needham, USA or team spirit!
Best Paint Design: we'll be looking at neatness, patterns, colors
Most Creative Design: what is your scout's favorite music, book, sport, superhero, video game, animal, etc? Can s/he represent that in a car?
Most Realistic: how close to a real race car can your Scout make his/her car look?
Scouts' Choice: the kids will vote on their favorite car!
Other Important Derby Dates:

November 2023 News
We hope your scouts had a happy and safe Halloween! We're looking forward to seeing everyone at our Pack meeting on Sunday, which will focus on two service projects for the Needham Community Council. See details below, as well as information about other upcoming events.
A quick note about Pack parent volunteers: We are so happy to have welcomed 22 new scouts to Pack 4 this year! This is our largest group of new scouts in many years, giving us our biggest Lion and Tiger dens ever! While this growth is so positive for the Pack, it does also mean there is a greater need for more parent helpers. Over the next few weeks, I'll be working on our annual charter renewal with our local Council and the national BSA organization, and unless we have a sufficient number of registered leaders, we will not be able to submit our renewal. If you are able and willing to consider joining our leadership team, please reach out to me or your Den leader. Pack 4 is an entirely volunteer-led organization, and we can't do it without you!

Let me know if you have any trouble at all. Again, this is brand new this year, so it may take a few attempts to get it all figured out!
POPCORN FUNDRAISER
Thank you to everyone who has already been out and about in your neighbors making wagon sales! We're excited to kick-off storefront sales this weekend, and there are still lots of shifts available. Please see the reminders below, and contact our Popcorn Kernel, Evan, with any questions (evanpmetter@gmail.com):
If you have not already done so, please:
Download the Trails End app by texting “APP” to 62771 to get a link to download. It is our common tool to sell and track inventory. If this is your first time registering: we are Spirit of Adventure Council, Great Blue Hill District, Pack 4. The unit is the same as the pack number: 4.
Read the attached "Popcorn Sales for Parents" document.
Determine what two shifts you’d like to take for the storefront sales and sign up via the app. (The early bird gets the choicest slots!)
Make a plan with your scout on what days you’ll do wagon sales in your neighborhood..
NEEDHAM CAMPOREE RECAP

Scouts enjoyed hiking, hatchet throwing, lashing and rope-tying, fire-building, an obstacle course, shelter-building, campfire-cooking demonstrations, skits around the campfire, s'mores, overnight camping and more. We hope everyone who attended had a great time!

Scouts will participate in hiking, outdoor activities and skill-building, games, dinner, a bonfire and skits, and an overnight camp-out (staying overnight is optional but encouraged). This event is open to registered scouting families only. Click HERE for additional details, including a schedule and packing list, and to register.
'23-'24 PACK CALENDAR
The '23-'24 Pack Calendar can be found HERE. While dates/times may occasionally change, we hope this provides a good overview of the year. Please note that this calendar includes only full Pack meetings and events; you'll receive information about Den meetings from your Den leaders.
PACK VOLUNTEERS
As an entirely volunteer-run organization, we are always in need of helping hands! There are lots of ways - big and small - for parents to get involved. You can view some of our current needs and open positions HERE.
*We are especially in need of assistant den leaders. Per a new BSA policy, we must have two registered adult leaders at every meeting, and we currently only have one leader per den. If you are interested in volunteering as an assistant den leader or would like to learn more about the role, please let us know!*
RENEW YOUR REGISTRATION AND HELP US SPREAD THE WORD
Returning Pack families - if you are continuing (and we hope you are!), please renew your registration ASAP so we have accurate numbers to start the year. Click HERE to complete the Google Form and pay the annual dues.
New families - we are SO happy to welcome you to the Pack this year! You all should have received a welcome email - please check your Spam/Junk folders if you didn't see it!
Prospective families - you are welcome to register anytime, but you must be registered this month if you are interested in attending Camporee. Please click HERE, and follow the directions under To Register a New Scout. Please reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.
Pack 4 is always welcoming new members, and we need your help spreading the word! If you have friends, neighbors or classmates who you think would enjoy being a part of our Pack 4 community, please encourage them to check out our website, Facebook or contact me at committee.chair.pack4@gmail.com for more information.
That's a wrap on our '22-'23 scouting year! Thank you to everyone who bundled up and braved the less-than-ideal picnic weather to celebrate with us yesterday. Extra thanks to Nate, Dana and Jorge for manning the grills; Jenna, Jenn and Heejean for helping to serve the food; and Evan for providing a little extra warmth with his Solo Stove!
We are so glad your scout and your families were part of Pack 4 this year, and we hope you'll be with us again next year! Registration for '23-'24 is now open. All current families must renew their registrations; additional info below. I'll have the full calendar available in early July, but for now, save the date for our first Pack Meeting on September 10th (tentative but likely) and for Camporee on September 30th - October 1st.
And while Pack and Den meetings are paused until September, there are still lots of fun opportunities for scouts available over the summer, including marching in the Needham July 4th Parade (if we have a parent volunteer!), and Council-sponsored Scout Day at the Red Sox and WooSox game and overnight.
As always, please reach out with any questions. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and restful summer, and hope to see you in September!
2023/2024 REGISTRATION
Registration is now open for the 2023/2024 scouting year! All current families who are continuing next year must renew their registration. Please click HERE to complete the Google Form and pay the annual dues. Annual dues are $175 for current families with a $25 discount for siblings. The annual dues cover the BSA and Council fees (see below), and Scouts receive: a Scout handbook and Pack 4 t-shirt, a New England Base Camp Adventure Card, a one year subscription to Scout Life Magazine (if requested), all advancement and activity badges, a Pinewood Derby car kit and Rocket Day rocket kit.
Of the $175 the Pack collects, the Pack retains only a small portion of that. As part of our annual charter renewal that we complete each December, we pay our governing Spirit of Adventure Council:
$75 per scout for national BSA dues
$48 per scout for Council dues (this is the mandatory Adventure Card fee)
$15 per scout for Scout Life Magazine
a $100 Charter Fee (with 20 scouts in '22/'23, this broke down to $5/per scout)
and a $45 fee for each adult leader
Given this, the Pack relies heavily on our fall Popcorn Fundraiser to subsidize the cost of scouting and to avoid significant fee increases. We are grateful to be able to maintain our dues at the same rate in '23-'24 as they were in '22-'23.
No Scout will be denied membership in Pack 4 due to financial circumstances; scholarships are available for all Pack fees by contacting Lauren.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Needham July 4th Parade
Marching in the July 4th Parade is a long-standing Cub Scout tradition in Needham, and we would love to have a Pack 4 group participate again this year. To do so, we need a Pack parent or two who will be available on the morning of July 4th to coordinate. This involves meeting the scouts at Greene's Field around 8:30AM and walking with them in the parade. All Pack parents and siblings are also welcome and encouraged to march; we really just need someone to serve as our point-person day-of! Please let Lauren know if you're interested.
Council Events: WooSox Game & Overnight and Scout Day at Fenway Park
The Spirit of Adventure Council has arranged two amazing summer opportunities for Packs - a WooSox Game & Sleepover on July 8th, and Scout Day at Fenway Park on August 13th! Please note: because these are Council-sponsored events, tickets need to be purchased through the links provided below. I am not able to purchase group tickets as we've done in past years. If Pack families would like to try to sit together, I've created a Google Sheet to help keep track of who's going and where everyone's sitting. No obligation to complete the form, but feel free to check it out before purchasing tickets and/or add your seat info after you've purchased.

Registration: I just learned about this event yesterday, apologies for the short notice! Please click HERE to sign up by Sunday, May 7th. To ensure that our seats are together, I have to call in our registration on Monday, May 8th. I will request either corner/endline seats ($31/person) or sideline seats ($38/person). There may be additional small taxes and fees. The Pack will cover the cost of scouts' tickets.
Please note: Because a section/price is not guaranteed until I submit our numbers, families are not required to pay at this time. However, I will need to pay in advance when registering, so please only complete the registration form if you are sure you can attend. I'll follow up with registered families for payment next week.
Memorial Day Flag Placements and Parade
In preparation for Memorial Day each year, Pack 4 joins other scouts and volunteers from the VFW to assist with replacing flags that mark our veterans’ resting places at Needham Cemetery and St. Mary's Cemetery. Pinewood Derby Weigh-In: All cars must be weighed-in to compete!
When: Thursday, February 2nd, 6:00PM-8:00PM
Where: The Alexanders' Home
SignUp: Click HERE to sign up for a time slot; contact Dana at dmalex@hotmail.com if you need to make alternate arrangements.
Details: The Weigh-In serves as the official registration for the Derby. Cars are registered by number and name, and are weighed and checked against size requirements and inspection rules (see the Derby newsletter for all rules).
Important Reminders for the Weigh-In:
Cars must be finished and paint must be dry.
While we encourage families to weigh their cars at home to have an idea of the weight, only the weight calculated at the weigh-in will count.
The maximum weight for a car is 5oz; this is strictly enforced to ensure fairness.
Simple tools will be available to remove excess weight, attach weight if needed (please bring your own weights) and for emergency repairs. Tip: it is much easier to add weight than to remove it!
Standard, unmodified wheels and “nail” axles (supplied with kit) must be used; no after-market wheels and/or axles are permitted.
The assigned car number must be clearly visible on the car.
Cars must have a name.
Cars will be left with Dana at the weigh-in and will be returned to scouts following the Derby.

Car kits will be available for those who have not yet received theirs, and we'll have extra kits for siblings for $5.00, cash or Venmo (@LaurenRAlexander).
*Please note, not all of Mark's tips are "legal" according to the Pack's Derby Rules and Regulations. Always follow the information in the Derby Info Packet to be safe!
As your scout plans his/her car design, remember that we recognize creativity in addition to speed!
Safety glasses are required when using the equipment. We will have glasses available and will sanitize in between use, but we encourage you to bring your own if you have them.

POPCORN FUNDRAISER
Our Popcorn Fundraiser is off to an AMAZING start, and we had a fantastic first weekend of storefront sales! Thank you Pack 4 families! Please see the reminders, below, from Evan, and contact him with any questions (evanpmetter@gmail.com):
Easy Re-supplies for Wagon Sales: Please use this Google Form to request a re-supply for 12 items or more. Orders will be left on the front porch of 39 Bobsled Dr, Needham with your name on it, on your requested weekend morning pick-up date.
Flyer: As we covered in the kick-off, we are selling Scouting, not popcorn. We are also striving for price transparency during the sale per feedback from last year. To both those ends, we have created a useful flyer to use during the sale. If you didn't get one or need to make more, you can print these double-sided at home.
Storefronts: There are still many open storefront shifts available in October! Please sign up today using the Trail's End app.
Everything you need to know: The link to our key resource doc is HERE. (You should all have access.)

We'll be sharing more about our volunteer needs at the Pack meeting; our anticipated open positions can be found here. There are lots of ways - big and small - for parents to get involved, and we hope you'll consider helping out!

If you're interested and available, please respond to this email by April 10th so I can determine if there's enough interest to register us a group, or if it makes more sense to have families register independently. If we go as a group, we can try to determine a time that works best for the majority. Parks & Rec will provide all materials and assign a clean-up location.
SAVE THE DATES:
Overnight Experience at the Plimoth Patuxet Museum
When: May 21st-22nd from 5:30PM-9:00AM

Additional information about the overnight and the location can be found HERE. Please note that these plans are tentative, as I'm awaiting additional information from the Museum - do not sign up on the Museum website! Once details are confirmed, I'll send more information about the program, pricing, etc, as well as a sign up.
Memorial Day Flag Placements
In preparation for Memorial Day each year, volunteers assist with replacing flags to mark our veterans’ resting places in both Needham Cemeteries. Pack 4 scouts participate in this effort in support of our chartering organization, VFW Post 2498. This usually takes place on the Monday and Wednesday evenings prior to Memorial Day (May 30th). I'll share confirmed dates and additional details when I have them.
Pack 4 Family Cookout
When: Sunday, June 12th, 4:30PM-6:30PM
Where: TBD but likely Claxton Field Playground
Details: Help us celebrate the end of our scouting year, and enjoy great food, games and conversation. Siblings, grandparents, friends, etc are all welcome! More details to come.
Finally, thanks to all of the Pack families who participated in Adventure Day on Saturday! We were fortunate to have beautiful weather for exploring all Base Camp had to offer, including archery, hiking, axe throwing, wood chopping, BB shooting, rope-making, bouldering and more! We'll definitely add this event to the calendar again next year!
We loved seeing everyone's creative cars at the weigh-in last night, and we can't wait for Race Day! We will be preparing the 30 sandwiches and snacks that will be delivered on Wednesday evening. We expect that it will take us 30-45 minutes to prepare and pack the brown bags. Please note that we need to limit this activity to 15 scouts and sign-ups are on a first-come basis. We hope to have additional sandwich-making opportunities available later in the spring if you're not able to join us this time.
Adventure Day at New England Base Camp
Click HERE to Register by March 15th.

Where: New England Base Camp, 411 Unquity Rd, Milton
Details: We're excited to announce an April Pack event - Adventure Day at New England Base Camp! NEBC is located in the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton and is the home base of our governing Spirit of Adventure Council. Adventure Day is an opportunity for scouts and their families to visit Base Camp and participate in the programs they offer at their own pace. Programs may include archery and B.B. shooting, outdoor sports, axe throwing, hiking, scavenger hunts, a ropes course, knot-tying and lashing, and S.T.E.M. activities. All activities are run by trained and certified staff.
Cost: Adventure Day is free for Pack 4 scouts, and the Pack is happy to cover the cost of one parent/adult per scout. The cost for additional parents/adults and non-Scout siblings or friends is $20/person. Siblings must be age 5+ to attend. Payment can be made via PayPal or check; please see the registration form for payment instructions. Scholarships are available for this event; please contact Lauren.
Did you know that the Spirit of Adventure Council provides programming throughout the year for scouts and their families, including summer camps? With the Adventure Card (which all Pack 4 scouts should have recently received from the Council), many of these programs are free or discounted. Visit the Spirit of Adventure website HERE to sign-up for their newsletter and learn more!
Thanks to all of the families who braved the cold last weekend to join us for the Pinewood Derby Clinic; we loved seeing all of the kids' creative ideas begin to come to life. If you were unable to attend, our Council is holding car-cutting days at Base Camp Milton on February 5th from 10:00AM - 4:00PM, and at the Woburn Scout Shop every Saturday from 10:00AM-3:00PM and Monday through Friday from 10:00AM-5:00PM through March 1st.
Derby Updates
The Derby will be held on Sunday, March 6. The times will likely be 12:00PM-4:00PM, but that is subject to change slightly. Stay tuned for updates on location and specific times.
If you're taking advantage of the day at home to work on your scout's Derby car, please be sure to review the 2022 Derby Information packet for important rules and guidelines. And remember that we recognize creativity in addition to speed! On Derby Day, trophies will be awarded for the following:
Most Spirit: we'll be looking for Den, Pack, Needham, USA or team spirit!
Best Paint Design: we'll be looking at neatness, patterns, colors
Most Creative Design: what is your scout's favorite music, book, sport, superhero, video game, animal, etc? Can s/he represent that in a car?
Most Realistic: how close to a real race car can your Scout make his/her car look?
Scouts' Choice: the kids will vote on their favorite car!
Check out this great YouTube video by Mark Rober on the "physics of a Pinewood Derby Car." A slightly shorter version is also available on the Scout Life website. Please note that Mark does suggest a few techniques that go against our Derby rules; be sure to carefully follow the Pack's guidelines when working on your car to avoid disqualification. Thanks to Pack parent, Matt Arnould, for finding and sharing the video!
February Pack Meeting
Weather permitting, we will meet as a Pack for outdoor games, hosted by our Bear Den, next Sunday, February 6th at 1:00PM at Newman Elementary School.
Happy New Year, Pack 4 Families! While we had all hoped 2022 would bring a return to more "normal" activities and meetings, we are instead starting off the year once again needing to weigh the benefits and risks of gathering. Our focus, as always, remains on keeping our scouts active, engaged and having fun - while doing all we reasonably can to keep Pack families safe. As such, we've made some changes to our plans for the Pinewood Derby Clinic on January 8th, and we're asking for your input to help guide our planning moving forward.
PINEWOOD DERBY CLINIC: NEW LOCATION and TIMES
When: January 8th, 12:30PM-4:30PM (Rain date: January 9th)
Where: The Alexanders' Home - 64 Mayflower Rd, Needham
*Please click HERE to view the new SignUp Genius and select a new time slot.*
In light of recent news, we've made the decision to hold the PWD Clinic outdoors, as we did last year. The weather may be more of a challenge in January than it was in April when we last did this, but with tailgate tents and outdoor heaters, we think we can manage. We've shifted our times to wrap up before dark and added an additional shift to keep numbers low. Please sign up for a new time slot HERE. Thank you for your flexibility and cooperation as we do our best to make this work!
We are also still in need of a Pinewood Derby Co-Coordinator!
After many years of running the Derby, Dana is ready to pass on the checkered flag! We would love to have a parent or two (ideally someone from the Lion, Tiger or Wolf Dens) work with Dana this year, with the goal of taking over next year. The role requires a few hours of "behind the scenes work," in addition to running the clinic and derby. It's an easy, fun and impactful way to get involved! Please reach out to Dana (dmalex@hotmail.com) or me if you have questions or you're interested.
PARENT SURVEY - PLEASE CLICK HERE.
We recognize that families may have different comfort levels for participating in Pack activities at this time. Please take a few moments to complete a short, 4-question Parent Survey; your feedback is important to us as we make decisions regarding upcoming meetings and events. Responses will be shared only with the Pack leaders.
JANUARY PACK MEETING

We are hopeful that by January 23rd, we will have a better sense of how this recent surge is playing out and we will be able to meet as a full Pack. Save the date for now, and keep an eye out for additional information as it gets closer.

If you'd like to purchase new books, please consider selecting books from Storytime Craft's wishlist, found HERE. Culturally diverse books are especially needed!
We encourage you to spread the word among friends and neighbors to collect as many books as you can! I'll be posting the following blurb on social media - feel free to copy and share!

Save the Dates - Pinewood Derby 2022
At the Pack Meeting, we'll also be passing out the Pinewood Derby Car Kits and sharing important information about the Derby. For our new families, the Pinewood Derby is one of the most exciting events of the year for our Scouts, when they design, construct and race their own wooden race cars. Photos and information from past years can be found HERE, and click below to see a video from last year's first-ever outdoor Derby!

The ceremony is usually less than an hour; keep an eye out for an email with exact times once that information is confirmed.
Scouts must be in their full Class A uniform - blue/tan shirt, neckerchief and hat.
The ceremony will take place rain or shine.
If anyone in your family is feeling ill, awaiting COVID test results or is currently subject to a quarantine, please do not attend.
November Pack Meeting

Where: Christ Episcopal Church Upper Hall, 1132 Highland Ave, Needham
Details: We will meet at the Church to award prizes to all scouts who participated in our 2021 Popcorn Fundraiser (see more information below). Weather permitting, we will then do a Pack clean-up at Memorial Field and the Town Center.
Popcorn Fundraiser Update
Our 2021 Popcorn Fundraiser has been a HUGE success and we are so grateful to everyone who has participated! While online sales can continue through December, storefronts and door-to-door sales have ended. The Pack sold over $20000, far exceeding our goal of $15000! We should be receiving between 37-39% of that in commission. We are still waiting on confirmation, but it is likely that we are one of the top three Packs in the Council. Additionally, we have 10 scouts who sold over $700 each - incredible!
Why does our fundraising matter? In short, popcorn makes our program possible. The amount we collect in annual dues each year barely covers the cost of what we pay to the Council as part of our annual recharter. As BSA National and Council fees have increased dramatically in recent years, the Pack has worked to keep dues low and to ensure that scouting is accessible to all families. Our fundraising allows us to provide materials such as handbooks and Rocket Day kits, to run activities and events like the Blue & Gold Banquet and Pinewood Derby, to subsidize the costs of day trips and overnight programs (when we can safely do them again), to offer scholarships for Pack dues and much more.
We thank each of you and your scouts who went door-to-door, emailed family and friends, ran a storefront, put a flyer in your office, posted on social media or otherwise took the time to support the Pack through your efforts! We are especially grateful to our Popcorn Kernel, Allison Coburn, for her exceptional commitment and leadership. We will recognize all scouts who participated at our November meeting. Additionally, we plan to hold our traditional Popcorn Celebration for scouts who sold over $250, but for safety, we will do that in the spring rather than in December.
Looking Ahead...
For our December Pack Meeting on Sunday 12/12 at 3:30PM, we will be partnering with Storytime Crafts for a book drive! If you're doing a pre-holiday clean-out before the new toys and books arrive, please hold onto your gently used children's books to help us support this fantastic, local nonprofit.
Did you know that Pack 4 has been a part of the Needham community since 1944?! We are grateful that the Pack remains strong and continues to grow after so many years, and especially after the challenges of 2020-2021. We are thrilled to be starting this year with THIRTEEN new scouts and we are fortunate to have so many returning families with us, too. Please continue to spread the word about the Pack and invite friends and neighbors to learn more about us. We welcome new members at any time!
Rocket Day 2021
Rocket Day is this Sunday, October 3rd from 1:00-3:30PM at Claxton Field. This event is open to both registered and prospective families. Please sign up here for a time slot.
Important Details:
We need sunshine and low winds for this event. Please keep an eye on your email Sunday morning for updates if the weather seems questionable.
To help things run safely and smoothly, we've added a few volunteer shifts to the SignUp. We need parents to help with crowd control, installing the engines and with the launches. No prior experience required! Please check the SignUp and volunteer if you're able.
If you have not yet picked up your rocket kit, please do so ASAP! Rockets will be in a box in front of the garage at 64 Mayflower Rd. today until 8:00PM and tomorrow from 8:00AM until noon.
Rockets must be assembled at least 24 hours before launch so the glue can dry. Please do not attempt to modify the rocket. The rockets only work if built according to the instructions and modified rockets can be a safety hazard.
Scouts should wear their Class A uniform or their Pack t-shirt.
October Pack Meeting
When: Sunday, October 17th at 3:00PM
Where: Christ Episcopal Church Upper Hall, 1132 Highland Ave, Needham.
Details: Our October Pack Meeting will feature our first-ever Recycled Rain Gutter Regatta! In teams, scouts will build and race small boats made out of recycled materials. More details to come, but start saving items today! Some ideas include: plastic bottles, 1/2 gallon milk jugs, take-out containers, straws, empty juice boxes, old pool noodles, aluminum foil and paper, magazine pages, etc. for sails. The Pack will also provide materials to share, as well as craft supplies for assembling and decorating the boats.
Popcorn Updates
Our Popcorn Fundraiser is off to an AMAZING start with over $4000 in sales already - thank you Pack 4 families! Scouts have until October 16th to sell; as a reminder, we ask that scouts try to raise $250 ($400 for siblings.)
Storefront Sales: There are still storefront shifts available, including a new location - Cafe Fresh Bagel - on Saturday, October 16th. Storefronts are a fun way for scouts to hit the $250 sales target. Please sign up for two shifts to begin; if shifts are still available on the Thursday before a sales weekend, Allison will send an email asking for additional volunteers. Check the Trail's End App to see what's available and sign up today! Questions? Email Allison at acoburn.1970@gmail.com.

We will do our best to adhere to these times as closely as possible. If your scout's car advances to the finals, you are welcome to stay for the remainder of the race or return at 3:30. Help Wanted
We are still looking for a new Pack Treasurer and Popcorn Kernel! Pack 4 is run entirely by volunteers, and we rely on our team of dedicated and supportive parents to help us provide a high-quality program for our Scouts.
Pack Treasurer: Accounting/financial experience preferred but not mandatory. The Pack treasurer will: maintain Pack bank and Paypal accounts; work with the leadership team to establish annual budget, dues and activity fees; track revenue and expenses and oversee reimbursements. Time commitment ranges from approximately 15 minutes to 1 hour/month (Sept-May); peak time commitment during popcorn sales (Oct, Nov) can be 2-3 hours/month. Please click HERE for a detailed description of the role.
Popcorn Kernel: The popcorn kernel oversees our annual popcorn fundraiser, which typically runs in September - November. This is ideally a two-person job and we would LOVE to see two Pack parents take this on together! Our current kernel, Allison, is happy to assist new volunteers in getting started. Please reach out with any questions about either role or if you are interested in jumping on board!

Pinewood Derby - Clinic this Sunday!
Car Building Clinic
When: Sunday, April 11th - 10:00AM-2:30PM
Where: The Alexander’s Home - 64 Mayflower Rd, Needham
We will be hosting our Pinewood Derby Clinic outdoors, in small groups, on Sunday, April 11th (rain date Saturday, April 17th.) During the clinic, scouts will receive their car kits and the Pack will provide saws and other simple tools; this is a great opportunity for Scouts to get started designing and building their cars!
Please click HERE to sign up for a time slot.
Scouts should come to the clinic with a few ideas for their design. A google search for Pinewood Derby cars will bring up lots of ideas; this website is a good resource, too, as is our own Pack 4 website (here and here).
We recognize creativity in addition to speed! While the fastest cars will receive awards, we'll also be giving trophies for the following:
Most Spirit: we'll be looking for Den, Pack, Needham, USA or team spirit!
Best Paint Design: we'll be looking at neatness, patterns, colors
Most Creative Design: what is your scout's favorite music, book, sport, superhero, video game, animal, etc? Can s/he represent that in a car? Go for it!
Most Realistic: how close to a real race car can your Scout make his/her car look?
Scouts' Choice: The kids will vote on their favorite car!
If you are unable to attend the clinic but would still like to participate in the Derby, please contact Dana at dmalex@hotmail.com to arrange pick up of your car kit.
Siblings and parents are welcome to make cars! Car kits will be available for $5.00 (cash only) at the clinic.
Please click HERE or on the attached PDF to read our 2021 Derby newsletter, which contains everything you need to know for building a car and participating in the race. Information can also be found on our Pack 4 website.
AOL Crossover Celebration
We will be holding an outdoor celebration on Sunday, May 2nd to recognize our "graduating" AOL scouts and their families. For safety, we are limiting the event this year to Webelo and AOL families only. Webelo and AOL parents - you should have received a Save the Date via Evite earlier today; please let me know if you did not!

April Vacation Programs & Summer Camp at New England Base Camp
New England Base Camp is offering online and in-person activities during April vacation. Highlights include STEM Camp in Milton and Science Day, Art Day and Woodworking Day in Woburn. Please click HERE for more information and to register.
Registration is also now open for Summer Day Camp at Base Camp Milton. Additional information and registration can be found HERE.
*Important: All Pack 4 Scouts receive an Adventure Card as part of their annual dues; the card provides discounts on most Base Camp programs. The Council has recently switched to a new online system which requires you to create an account and be logged-in to receive the discount (directions are found on the registration page). I did a test run of registering this morning, and after many months of glitches, the system finally seems to be working properly. Please let me know if you have any trouble!

*NEW* February Break at Base Camp Milton
Thank you to all of the Pack families who braved the frigid temperatures and joined us last Saturday for our outing to Base Camp Milton! Scouts participated in archery, rope making and a ropes course, fire building, hatchet work and more! We will plan to do another Adventure Day in the spring when it's a bit warmer and even more activities are available.
In the meantime, I just received a note that the Council is hosting a Winter Camp during February break week, open to all children in grades k-5. You can attend all 4 days, or choose the days you'd like. Please note that this is not a Pack 4-organized event; please register directly with the Council.
WINTER CAMP at BASE CAMP MILTON
Date: February 16th– February 19th, 2021
Cost: $65 per day/Scouts receive a discount with the Adventure Card
Kids in 1st through 5th grades will have a blast! Activities will include sledding, "snurfing," snowshoeing, fort-building, outdoor camp activities and games. Fun for all with advancement opportunities for Cub Scouts, too!
Click HERE for more information. Although online registration is available, the system makes it very difficult to use Adventure Cards. I recommend contacting Heather Sheehan at 617-272-3501 or heather.sheehan@scouting.org to ensure you receive the discount.

Join Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86496157263 (meeting ID: 864 9615 7263)
Please join us next Sunday, January 17th at 3:00PM for our January Pack Meeting. We'll be playing some fun Kahoots organized by our AOL Den, as well as making heart cards for the Needham non-profit Catching Joy. Catching Joy is run by a 17-year-old Needham resident and his family, and they promote volunteerism beginning with young children and their families. They aim to send out 100,000 decorated paper hearts with positive messages to essential workers and people in need to spread empathy, inclusiveness, creativity, kindness, love, hope, and peace.
To help the card-making go smoothly, please make sure your scout has the following during our meeting:
Paper (any type is okay and they encourage recycling...you can use paper bags, gift bags, envelopes...as long as it can be cut into the shape of a heart!)
Scissors to cut the paper into a heart (please assist your scout as needed for safety!)
Crayons, colored pencils or markers
Optional: any other arts&crafts materials that your scout would like to use (ie stickers, glue sticks, magazines to cut out pictures/words, etc)
Parents and siblings are welcome to make their own cards! Finished cards can be dropped off at Lauren's house by January 20th (64 Mayflower Rd), and Lauren will deliver them to Catching Joy.

Brand new, reusable face masks
New, unopened bottles of hand soap and hand sanitizer
Brand new winter coats or gently used, dry cleaned coats. Please note they can ONLY accept gently used coats in individual plastic dry cleaning bags. They will not accept used coats without proof of dry cleaning.
Any of the items on their Amazon Emergency Essentials Wish List (if you order items from Amazon, you can ship them directly to COH, or bring them to the meeting).
If you are unable to attend the meeting but would still like to donate, please drop off your items to Lauren (64 Mayflower Rd) before December 7th.
Safety Precautions: Each time slot is restricted to 25 participants to comply with Council safety regulations. All Scouts and parents must wear a mask at all times. Scouts will be socially distanced and will receive their own bag of supplies to make the kits, to limit sharing/touching of supplies. While we recognize that this is an activity that all family members may be interested in, we kindly ask that only Pack 4 scouts and one parent attend in order to keep our numbers low.
Popcorn Fundraiser
We are in the final weeks of our 2020 Popcorn Sales and fundraising drive! Thank you to all of the Pack families who have already participated!
Haven't started selling yet? Now is the perfect time! Popcorn makes a great gift and Trail's End has added lots of new products, including holiday bundles and tins, candy collections and more!
And remember that, new this year, we are also accepting tax exempt donations via PayPal. On this Giving Tuesday, please consider asking friends, families and neighbors to make a tax-deductible donation to support scouting in Needham. Visit our website for more information on our fundraiser!
November "Camporee"
We hope your Scouts enjoyed participating in some of the traditional Camporee activities during our November Pack meeting! Visit our website for lots of fun photos!
Thanks to all of the Pack families who participated in one of our October hikes and to the Den leaders who organized the hikes! Click here to see more great photos!
November Pack Meeting
When: Sunday, November 8th, 2:00 - approx 4:00PM
Where: Needham Town Forest. We will meet at Horsford Pond, located on Central Ave near the Needham RTS. There is a small parking lot at Horsford Pond, with additional parking available at Claxton Field.
RSVP: Please click HERE to RSVP!
The Needham Camporee is cancelled this year, so we are giving scouts the chance to experience some favorite Camporee activities at our November Pack Meeting! Because of the strong commitment to safety that Pack 4 families demonstrated at Rocket Day and the hikes, we feel confident that we can safely host this meeting outdoors, in-person.
We will meet at the Horsford Pond entrance to the forest at 2:00PM and hike to the Needham Scouters' Camp in socially distanced groups. At the Scout Camp, there will be several activity stations set up, including:
an obstacle course
campfire building
knot tying
tent set-up
assembling a first aid kit
Each Den will be assigned a specific rotation through the stations. All participants must wear a mask at all times, and please be mindful of social distancing. We ask that only one parent/guardian attend, and no siblings attend. The meeting will take place rain or shine, within reason. Keep an eye on your email for updates should the weather be questionable.
Scouts should wear their Class A uniform, appropriate outerwear and shoes for hiking, and bring a small backpack with the six essentials for a hike: Flashlight, Filled Water Bottle, Whistle, First Aid Kit, Sun Protection and Trail Food.
Fundraising Update
We are SO CLOSE to reaching our Pack fundraising goal! Thank you to everyone who has participated so far. Nearly 50% of our scouts have sold popcorn, and 30% have received a donation in their name! Click here for all of the Popcorn 2020 information, including a sample letter that you can send to family and friends. Trail's End has recently added new, limited edition products for the holidays, so this is a great time to encourage family and friends to place orders!
We are currently out of door tags, but we can place another order if there is interest. Please let Lauren know if you would like more! Our fundraiser will run through December, so there is still plenty of time to participate!
COVID Safety Updates from the Council
A Note from the Council:
With the continued rise of COVID cases in Massachusetts spiking above 500 for the last 10 days, The Spirit of Adventure Council is changing Council protocols affecting Gears 3 and 4, and how this will affect the local units as they visit our Council properties, and how they should function locally.
For now, as a whole, we remain in Gear 4. However, the COVID status (Red, Yellow, or Green) of the hometown will be factored into what gear the unit will be allowed to participate. Yellow and Green towns will be able to participate at our council facilities based on Gear 4 protocols. Red towns will need to participate with the Gear 3 protocols. More details about each gear can be found HERE.
Town color status levels are determined on a weekly basis and announced on Wednesdays. The site to visit to check on your town’s status is: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/community-level-covid-19-data-reporting
The Spirit of Adventure Council continues to strive to meet or exceed the safety protocols for the safety of our Scouts. Please pass along to your unit leaders and parents of Pack 4 as necessary. Thank you for doing your part to help protect our Scouts.
---------
Wishing you and your scouts a happy and safe Halloween! 🎃
Don't miss one of our most exciting days of the year, as scouts launch their homemade model rockets into the Needham skies!
When: Sunday, October 4th, 10:30AM-12:00PM
Where: Claxton Field, Needham. Parking is in the Claxton Field lot. If full, please park in the Horsford Pond parking area. There is NO parking along Central Ave.
SignUp: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090449A5A62AA31-pack12
Important Information:
Scouts should assemble their rocket prior to Rocket Day - rockets can take a bit of time to assemble, and be sure to leave enough time for the glue to dry! If you have not yet received your rocket kit, please contact Lauren by responding to this email.
Please do not attempt to modify the rocket by adding additional materials. The rockets go very fast and only work if built according to the instructions. It is unlikely that your rocket will fly if modified and, at worst, modified rockets can be a safety hazard.
Scouts may wear their Class A uniforms or Pack t-shirt.
All Scouts and adults must wear a mask at all times
Should the group for any given time slot become too large, we may need to ask you to choose a different time
Only Pack 4 Scouts and one adult should attend
Please be mindful of social distancing and maintain a 6ft distance from other participants whenever possible
In place of a full October Pack meeting, we have four fun hikes planned on October 17/18 and 24/25. The hikes will be led by Den Leaders, and families are welcome to attend as many as they'd like! Details for each hike are below; please click here to sign up!
Saturday, October 17th at 3:00PM: Great Blue Hills Red Dot Trail, led by Jorge. The trail is near the Trailside Museum and ski area. See map here: https://www.massaudubon.org/content/download/15862/236699/file/blue-hills-dcr-trail-map-2015.pdf
Sunday, October 18th at 10:00AM: Noanet Woodlands, led by Dana and Lauren. The Noanet Woodlands have a few different entrances - we will meet at Caryl Park(approximate address is 107 Dedham St., Dover). https://thetrustees.org/place/noanet-woodlands/
Saturday, October 25th at 2:30PM: Pegan Hill, Natick, led by JR: https://thetrustees.org/place/pegan-hill/
Sunday, October 26th at 3:00PM: Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, led by Jim: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/massachusetts/moose-hill-bay-circuit-turkey-bluff-and-billings-loop
In spite of the challenging circumstances this year, our popcorn fundraiser is off to a great start! Between donations and popcorn sales, we are nearly half-way to our goal of raising $3500 for the Pack! We still have plenty of door tags and Thank You notes available; please email Lauren if you'd like to pick up any more! Visit our Popcorn Page for all information on this year's fundraiser.
Everyone should have received a new Pack 4 t-shirt; please let Lauren know if you did not. Those t-shirts are the scouts' Class B uniform, and can be worn for hikes and other outdoor activities. If we ask Scouts to wear their Class A uniform, they should be in their blue/tan shirt, hat and neckerchief. If you need a new Den hat, neckerchief or neckerchief slide, you can purchase them online at https://www.scoutshop.org or one of the local scout shops:
New England Base Camp Scout Shop: 411 Unquity Road, Milton, 617-361-0316
New England Scout Shop - Southborough: 23 Turnpike Road, Southborough, 508-229-2396
Brenner's Children Shop: 694 Washington Street, Norwood, 781-762-2276
It has always been a priority for Pack 4 leaders to keep our dues low and to ensure that Scouting is accessible to all. Thanks to your amazing fundraising efforts, we've been able to maintain our dues at $100 for the last several years. Unfortunately, we have seen significant increases in the fees we are required to pay to the National organization and our local Council. Last year, our national fees were unexpectedly doubled in November from $30 to $60 per scout, and we pay an additional $30 fee per scout to the Council. It has already been announced that both the $60 and $30 fees will be increased this year and next. Consequently, we've made the difficult decision to increase our Pack dues from $100 to $150, for families who register after October 1st. If you have already paid your dues this year, you are all set and do not have to pay any additional amount! Thank you for your support and understanding!
Questions? Email Lauren at committee.chair.pack4@gmail.com. Looking forward to seeing you all on Rocket Day!
This past Sunday, June 1, should have been our annual family picnic. While we are disappointed that we weren't able to celebrate the end of our scouting year and kick off summer together, we wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support and involvement throughout the year, and especially during the last few months. Whether you participated in a Zoom Den meeting, made a sign for the Hearts for Healthcare heroes campaign, put out a stuffed animal for our driving safari, or worked on advancement requirements - we appreciate you and we are so thankful for our Pack 4 community. A big congratulations to all of our Scouts who have completed adventures and earned advancements - please see the full list below! We completely understand that scouting may have taken a back seat to other priorities; we will spend some time in the Fall supporting scouts in "catching up" with any outstanding requirements.
A special thanks to all of our Den Leaders and other members of our Pack leadership team who have continued to work behind the scenes to support the Pack and keep us moving forward. Although we don't yet know what September will look like, we are continuing to make plans for the 2020-2021 scouting year and we hope that your family will join us! Registration for 2020-2021 is now open - click here for the Pack registration form.
Wishing you a healthy and happy summer.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD (CANCELLED)

Staple a yellow flyer to a brown grocery bag for each house on your route (make sure you don't staple the bag shut!)
Bags should be hung on door handles or tucked inside storm doors. Please make sure bags are visible and won't blow away and cause litter

Derby Notes & Helpful Hints
At the Pinewood Derby, we like to recognize creativity in addition to speed! While the fastest cars will receive awards, we'll also be giving awards and trophies for the following:
Most Spirit: we'll be looking for Den, Pack, Needham, USA or sports' team spirit!
Best Paint Design: we'll be looking at neatness, patterns, colors
Most Creative Design: what is your scout's favorite music, book, sport, superhero, animal, etc? Can s/he represent that in a car? Go for it!
And new this year...
Most Realistic: how close to a real race car can your Scout make his/her car look?
Scouts' Choice: We'll let the kids vote on their favorite car!
Encourage your scouts' creativity and have fun! And a gentle reminder that Pinewood cars should be the work of our scouts, not our parents. Please review and respect the rules that were included in the Derby newsletter (available here) to ensure that this is a fun, friendly and fair event for all of our participants.
Cars for siblings/parents/friends are still available at $5/car. Email Dana at dmalex@hotmail.com if you're interested!

Hello Pack 4 families! We are in the home stretch now, with only one month to go until we wrap up our 2018-2019 scouting year! We still have lots of great activities planned between now and then, and it's never too early to start thinking about next year. Registration for 2019-2020 is now open! Current families who are re-registering for next year need to complete only the Pack Application and pay the $100 in yearly dues. The BSA application does NOT need to be completed again.
2019-2020 RECRUITMENT
Pack 4 is recruiting new families and we need your help to spread the word! Here's what you can do:
Reach out to friends and neighbors! Invite them to your next Den meeting or to any of our upcoming events to learn more about the Pack.
Do you live on a busy street? Host a yard sign for us! Signs will be available at our May Pack meeting. If you're still holding on to a sign from the Fall, this is a great time to put it back out!
Updated recruitment flyers will also be available at the May meeting. Know a Needham business with a community news bulletin board? Are you involved in other volunteer organizations (ParentTalk, PTCs, etc)? Grab a few flyers and help us share them around town. If you'd like the flyer in a digital format instead, just let us know.
And last but not least, if you are active on Facebook, follow us @Pack4Needham and Like/Share our posts! The more followers, likes and shares we get, the more visibility our page receives!
PACK LEADERSHIP & VOLUNTEER NEEDS
Treasurer: We are sad to be saying good-bye to our Pack Treasurer, Joanna Cram, who has expertly overseen Pack finances this year. Joanna - we will miss you and we wish you all the best on your next adventure! We are looking for a new volunteer to serve as treasurer. This role can be done entirely "behind the scenes" and on your own time. If you have experience in accounting or finance and you'd like to get more involved, we would love to talk with you!
Popcorn Kernel : We are still searching for our next Popcorn Kernel (or Kernels - this is a position that could be shared by a few families!) The Popcorn Kernel is one of our most important Pack positions, as without it there can be no popcorn sales. And without popcorn sales, our scouts will be losing the important skills they learn through selling, like setting goals and working to achieve them, how to present oneself and how to handle money. We would also see a significant increase in membership costs. Our popcorn sales allow us to keep our yearly dues low, to subsidize the cost of overnights, to provide handbooks, Pinewood Derby cars and rocket kits, etc. Please consider partnering with a Pack friend to help us fill this urgent need!
ROCKET DAY 2019!
We are excited to once again be joining Packs 8 and 23 for this awesome event! Don't miss as scouts from all three Needham packs launch their homemade model rockets into the Needham skies! Special thanks to Pack 4 parent David Itzkovits for taking on Rocket Day planning for us.
When: Saturday, May 18, 8:00am-10:30am
Where: Claxton Field (across from the Needham RTS). Parking is in the Claxton Field lot. If full, please park in the Horsford Pond parking area. There is NO parking along Central Ave.
Details: Model rocket kits have been distributed to Den Leaders, who will be passing them out in the coming weeks. Scouts should assemble the rocket prior to Rocket Day - the rockets can take a bit of time to assemble, and the glue needs time to dry! If you have not yet received your rocket kit, please contact your Den Leader.
**For the safety of our scouts, this is not a drop-off event. All scouts must attend with an adult.**
Volunteers: We need a few parents to help out at Rocket Day to ensure that the event runs smoothly. Please email David Iztkovits at ditzkovits@gmail.com if you're able to volunteer!

Pack 4 welcomes boys and girls in grades K-5. Please spread the word among your friends, neighbors and school communities!
A big thank you to those of you who hosted yard signs for us! Please bring them with you to the October meeting, so we can use them again next year (let us know if you can't make the meeting, and we'll pick them up!)
Popcorn Sales
Our Popcorn Sales are in full swing, and we had a successful first weekend of group sales! Visit our website for information about why Pack 4 sells popcorn, for important selling safety tips, and to sign up for group selling events.
All Pack 4 Scouts who sell at least $250 in popcorn ($400 for siblings) will be invited to our Popcorn Celebration on November 30, 6-8pm, at the awesome RockSpot Climbing in Norwood! Stay tuned for more information.
If you have not yet received your popcorn materials, please contact Karen Peters at karenwpeters@hotmail.com.
Slide Recall
There is currently a recall on neckerchief slides that were bought between February 2018 and August 2018. If you bought your slide this year in that time period, please follow the instructions here to return and get a replacement.
